Chemically, the reaction is formulated as CaC2 + 2H2O → C2H2 + Ca (OH) 2. The reaction yields acetylene as well as by-products such as calcium hydroxide and heat. It is imperative to remove heat to prevent explosions. However, heat is moderated by water.

Acetylene plant process starts with feeding calcium carbide into hoppers of acetylene generator. Using carbide feed mechanism the pre-determined amount of carbide reacted with water. Our acetylene generation plant is equipped with a medium pressure generator having the capability for using calcium carbide with graded size in the range of 4mm to 50mm. However, it is important that dust particle level should not be more than 15%. DCPL acetylene generator is fitted with residue agitation and water inlet. Moreover, it is also equipped with residue discharge with carbide size desirably between 25-50.

Acetylene Gas Purification System
There are mainly three methods for generating acetylene gas for industrial applications. DCPL uses the chemical method for industrial production of the fuel gas. Working principle of the process involves a chemical reaction in which calcium carbide is reacted with water to generate acetylene gas plus other by-products such as calcium hydroxide and heat. The reaction generates a lot of heat which is moderated to prevent fire and explosions.
Acetylene plant uses one skid to house the equipment for generating the fuel gas and the 2nd skid has the equipment for controlling the behavior of the gas.
